On Atheism

in #blog #atheism #religion #philosophy , 347 words

We made our gods in our image; the myths, legends, and fantastical beliefs flowing from the exchange of cultures throughout millennia. The great sieve of more bloodshed and misery than one can fathom filtering and forcing out ideologies, instilling dominant and oppressive beliefs into the veins of society.

If something made this world, they are either evil or incapable and far from perfect or all-loving.

No, of course no one made it.

How can you not see the horrors in our supposed creation?

The situation is that we live in a mind-fuckingly large and old universe with no proof or hope of a deity; nor even meaning at the cosmic level.

We create the meaning.

Those who don’t seriously question what they believe and why they believe it (not just wondering for a moment, but really seriously critically thinking), may not entertain the feelings of freedom: their minds steeped in the manipulative notions of “sin” and constant surveillance of every thought are warped into fascistic beliefs and self-harm.

The universe doesn’t care about us.

There is no evidence of anything outside the natural; no supernatural beings or planes-of-existence, no creator, no workings of celestial bodies controlling our days or superstitious habits warding off bad luck.

Destiny is inexorable.

While not free from causes and conditions, we can find the feeling of freedom through being in the moment and infusing ourselves with love, joy, compassion, and acceptance.

Our karma echoes out over the vast stretches of time.

Until at some point–in the far future–all life goes extinct, and the universe ends.

The scary truth is, we are born, we die and are gone forever.

But that truth isn’t scary actually.

Because we have each other.

“All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us,” says the wizard.

There is peace, joy, and love with friends, partners, found family, allies and comrades.

May we aspire to be defenders of the oppressed, workers in solidarity, hearts full of queer joy, and free to be who we are in this short life. 🏳️‍⚧️
