This place is special to me. If you know me at all, you know I’m a passionate person who wears her heart on her sleeve. This year has been incredibly taxing for many reasons. But this place always reminds me of the joy of the holiday season and the cozy ways in which we can gift presence to each other as we unravel the threads of life.
I’ve been a regular here since 2010. It’s one of my favorite places near PDX. It was built during the 1930’s via the Works Progress Administration (WPA) as a project for Oregonians to enjoy for decades to come. FDR visited and made a little speech. It’s so damn cozy in the winter and such a marvel anytime of year.
If you stay at the hotel, you can grab a cup of coffee in the mornings and enjoy the quiet.
During the summer, there are hiking opportunities around the lodge.
They shot the exterior for “The Shining” here.
On clear days, you get really nice views of Mt. Jefferson in the distance, and can be above the clouds.
The Ram’s Head Bar occupies the upper level of the Headhouse. I love grabbing a drink and reading a book near the fire.
I took this photo when I was just getting into photography properly in college. Since then, thousands of people have downloaded this image. I cherish those early years of learning.
Yeah, the above photo is from one of the lodge rooms!
You can borrow games from the desk and chill. Vid from my most recent trip in 2024.
